This bill establishes a "Police Career Incentive Trust Fund" to support local police departments. This fund will be financed by assessments, ranging from $50 to $250, imposed on individuals aged 18 or older who are convicted of certain misdemeanors, or against whom a finding of sufficient facts for a conviction is made for specific misdemeanor charges related to assault or possession of certain weapons. The court has the discretion to reduce or waive these assessments if they would cause severe financial hardship to the convicted individual. All collected assessments will be transmitted monthly to the state treasurer and deposited into the newly created trust fund, which will be administered by the state treasurer and used to reimburse cities and towns for police career incentives. This bill also amends existing laws to direct payments through this new trust fund and clarifies that these assessments are in addition to any other fines or restitution.
