This bill proposes to amend Chapter 85 of the General Laws to allow cities to establish "senior citizen safety zones" by ordinance on public roads under their control. Within these designated zones, cities can, under the direction of their traffic engineer, implement measures to enforce posted vehicle speeds, such as installing signals or signs that indicate doubled speeding fines. The traffic engineer has the authority to create and modify rules for this purpose, and cities must inform the state traffic engineer when a senior citizen safety zone is established or when a speed limit is reduced on a local road, though these provisions will not apply to state highways or major arterial roads.
