This bill, titled the Military Reserve Survivor Benefit Equity Act, aims to ensure that survivors of reserve component members who die from an injury or illness incurred or aggravated in the line of duty during inactive-duty training receive the same Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity benefits as survivors of regular Armed Forces members who die in the line of duty while on active duty. The SBP is a program that provides financial support to the families of service members who die in the line of duty. The bill also standardizes how annuity increases are applied to dependent children when there is no eligible surviving spouse. Furthermore, for deaths that occurred before the bill's enactment, the relevant Secretary can, within six months of the enactment date and in consultation with the surviving spouse, choose to provide the annuity to the dependent children instead of the surviving spouse.
