This bill, titled the Military Consumer Protection Act, amends the Consumer Financial Protection Act to expand the oversight and protections offered by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to servicemembers. Specifically, it brings certain provisions of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) under CFPB jurisdiction, which are designed to protect military personnel from financial and legal hardships while they are in active service. These SCRA provisions cover a range of financial matters including future financial transactions (excluding insurance), default judgments in legal cases (excluding child custody proceedings), interest rates on debts incurred before service, evictions, installment contracts for purchases or leases, mortgages and trusts, motor vehicle leases, telephone service contracts, and the waiver of rights through written agreements (excluding bailments). The SCRA is a federal law that suspends or modifies civil liabilities of military members and their dependents during military service.
