This Joint Resolution proposes an amendment to the New Mexico Constitution to change how state legislators are paid. Currently, legislators receive per diem (daily allowance) and mileage for attending sessions and interim committee meetings, as well as other allowances. This resolution, however, aims to establish a new system where, starting January 1, 2017, legislators would receive an annual salary capped at the median household income in New Mexico for the most recent calendar year, as determined by the U.S. Census Bureau, in addition to their per diem and mileage. The resolution also clarifies that no other compensation or allowances would be provided. If approved by the legislature, this proposed constitutional amendment would then be put to a vote by the people of New Mexico at the next general election or a special election.
