This bill amends existing law to increase the penalty for hindering the apprehension or prosecution of another person, meaning someone who helps another avoid being caught or punished for a crime. Previously, the severity of the penalty depended on the degree of the crime the person being helped was accused of, with specific exceptions for family members. Now, the bill states that anyone who hinders apprehension or prosecution will be guilty of a crime or offense of the same degree as the most serious crime the person they are helping is known to have been charged with or is liable to be charged with. This applies to offenses or violations related to traffic laws (Title 39 of the Revised Statutes) or insurance fraud (chapter 33A of Title 17 of the Revised Statutes). The bill takes effect immediately.
