This bill amends existing New Mexico law to increase the minimum hourly wage for certain school personnel. Specifically, it raises the minimum wage from six dollars ($6.00) to fifteen dollars ($15.00) per hour for school district cafeteria staff, school bus drivers, noncertified school personnel, and licensed educational assistants, and this rate is in effect through fiscal year 2018. Beginning with fiscal year 2019 and for each year thereafter, this minimum wage will be adjusted annually based on the percentage change in the consumer price index for the United States, as published by the U.S. Department of Labor, ensuring the wage keeps pace with inflation. The bill also clarifies that charter schools are included in this requirement, in addition to local school districts, and the changes are effective July 1, 2017.
