This bill, the Healthy Housing Council Act of 2016, establishes an independent Interagency Council on Healthy Housing within the executive branch to address the significant health risks associated with substandard housing in the United States, such as lead-based paint hazards, radon, and pest infestations, which disproportionately affect vulnerable populations like children and low-income families. The Council, composed of representatives from various federal agencies including Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency, along with non-federal members, will review federal programs and services related to housing, health, energy, and environmental issues, monitor and recommend improvements to these programs at federal, state, and local levels, and identify ways to reduce duplication and ensure better collaboration among agencies to make healthy housing more accessible and affordable for all Americans.
