This bill, relative to benefit payments by the New Bedford Police Association, allows the association, with the approval of its board of directors, to pay specific sums to its members or their beneficiaries under various circumstances, notwithstanding any other laws. These payments include $15,000 upon the death of an active member to named beneficiaries, and upon resignation or retirement due to injury or disability, a member in good standing can receive either $150 per year of membership (up to 20 years) or $1,000, whichever is greater. Additionally, members in good standing for at least 10 years, or who have paid equivalent dues, or who have been pensioned due to injury or illness, are eligible for the greater of $3,750 or $375 per year of membership (up to 20 years), with this amount reducing other potential benefits. The bill also outlines payments of $1,000 or $150 per year of membership (up to 20 years) for members retiring after at least 10 years of good standing, and $7,500, less any amounts paid under other clauses, to beneficiaries upon the death of a retired member in good standing. Finally, a member in good standing will receive $2,000 upon the death of their spouse, subject to board approval. This bill also repeals a previous act from 2012 related to these matters.
