This bill appropriates $368,500,000 from the general fund to the public education department for distribution through the state equalization guarantee (a funding formula used to allocate state money to public schools) for fiscal year 2018. The purpose is to provide sufficient funding for public education in New Mexico based on the funding increase recommended in a 2008 independent study of the state's public school funding formula, as adjusted for inflation. Any unused funds will revert back to the general fund at the end of the fiscal year.
