Bill Summary

To provide for an exception to a limitation against appointment of persons as Secretary of Defense within seven years of relief from active duty as a regular commissioned officer of the Armed Forces. (Sec. 1) This bill allows the first person, and only such person, appointed as Secretary of Defense after the enactment of this bill to be a person who is, on the date of appointment, at least three years after relief from active duty as a commissioned officer of a regular component of the Armed Forces. (Under current law, an individual may not be appointed as Secretary of Defense within seven years after relief from such active duty.)

AI Summary

This bill provides for an exception to the existing law that prohibits the appointment of a person as Secretary of Defense within seven years of their relief from active duty as a regular commissioned officer in the Armed Forces. Specifically, this bill allows the first person appointed as Secretary of Defense after the enactment of this bill to be someone who is at least three years, but less than seven years, removed from their active duty service as a regular commissioned officer. This is a one-time exception to the existing seven-year requirement.
