This bill provides for the operation of autonomous motor vehicles in Nebraska. It defines "autonomous motor vehicle" and "autonomous technology," and allows a person with a valid driver's license to operate an autonomous vehicle in autonomous mode on the state's highways. The bill requires autonomous vehicles to have certain safety features, such as a system to alert the operator of technology failures and the ability to safely stop the vehicle if the operator does not take control. It also exempts autonomous vehicles operating in autonomous mode from prohibitions on using handheld wireless communication devices while driving.
