This bill amends the laws regarding the number of signatures required for nominating petitions for minor party candidates and independent candidates in New Mexico. For minor party candidates, the bill sets the number of required signatures as the average of the sum of the total number of signatures required for each major party candidate for the office sought in the preceding primary election. For independent candidates, the bill also sets the number of required signatures as the average of the sum of the total number of signatures required for each major party candidate for the office sought in the preceding primary election. The bill removes the previous requirements that the number of signatures be a percentage of the total votes cast in the last gubernatorial election.
