Bill Summary
AN ACT RELATING TO HEALTH; REQUIRING HEALTH FACILITIES THAT PERFORM MAMMOGRAPHIES TO PROVIDE CERTAIN INFORMATION RELATING TO BREAST DENSITY TO PATIENTS.
AI Summary
This bill requires health facilities that perform mammographies in New Mexico to provide patients with information about their individual breast density classification based on the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) established by the American College of Radiology. If the patient has heterogeneously dense or extremely dense breast tissue, the facility must provide a notice informing the patient that dense breast tissue can make it more difficult to evaluate the results of a mammogram and may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. The bill also allows facilities to provide patients with informational materials about breast density, such as the American College of Radiology's brochure on the subject.
