This bill enacts the "Tom Cronan Physical Education Act", which amends Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) Titles 49, Chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6. The key provisions of the bill require each local education agency (LEA) to ensure that elementary school students participate in a physical education class at least twice per full school week, for a total of at least 60 minutes per week. The physical education classes must accommodate students of all physical ability levels, including those with disabilities, and be taught by licensed physical education teachers. The bill also requires LEAs to file annual reports with the Commissioner of Education verifying compliance with these new physical education requirements. The Act is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2019, with exceptions for certain counties until the 2021-2022 school year.
