This bill requires a person to declare a statewide political party affiliation before voting in a primary election in Tennessee. Specifically, the bill amends the Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) to add a new section to the voter registration record that allows a person to declare their statewide political party affiliation. The bill also requires that any person registered to vote prior to January 1, 2018, must declare their statewide political party affiliation at the first primary election they vote in following that date. The bill further amends the TCA to specify that a registered voter is only entitled to vote in a primary election if they are affiliated with that political party or, if registered prior to January 1, 2018, have declared allegiance to that party. This change takes effect on January 1, 2018.
