This bill provides retirement benefits for veterans. It allows retired members of a retirement system who are veterans and served in the U.S. armed forces prior to July 24, 1996 to have their retirement allowance recalculated to include up to four years of additional creditable service for their active military service, as long as they did not already receive credit for that service under existing law. The bill applies to both former and present Massachusetts National Guard and Active Reserve personnel, with creditable service time for Guard or Reserve service counted towards retirement on a 5-to-1 ratio. The provisions of the bill take effect for a political subdivision's retirement system upon majority vote of the system's board and local legislative body.
