This bill aims to enhance courthouse security by prohibiting individuals, other than law enforcement officers performing their official duties, from carrying firearms, loaded or unloaded, in courthouses without written authorization from the trial court administrator and chief justice. The bill establishes penalties of up to a $1,000 fine and/or one year in prison for violating this provision. Additionally, the bill imposes a harsher penalty of up to 5 years in state prison or 2.5 years in a jail/house of correction, and/or a fine of up to $5,000, for carrying a firearm in a courthouse with the intent to use it during the commission of a crime. The bill also requires the posting of notices about these provisions at each public entrance to courthouses.
