This bill aims to protect justices of the Commonwealth and their families from criminal acts and threats. It gives the Attorney General exclusive authority to investigate and prosecute all such cases, with the resources of the State Police to assist in the investigation and protection of the members of the judiciary. The bill also establishes penalties of up to 2.5 years in the house of correction or up to 10 years in state prison, and up to a $25,000 fine, for anyone convicted of making threats against any justices of the Supreme Judicial Court, the Appeals Court, or the Trial Court, and their immediate family members. Additionally, the bill adds "threats against members of the judiciary under section 13D of chapter 268" to the list of offenses that can be heard in the district court.
