This bill seeks to provide credit for public employee retirement purposes to certain employees who served in the United States armed forces. Specifically, it would allow members retired prior to July 24, 1996, who are veterans as defined under state law, to receive credit for up to four years of active military service, as long as they have not previously received such credit. The bill also allows Massachusetts National Guard and Active Reserve personnel, both former and present, to apply their guard or reserve service towards retirement on a ratio of five years for each year of active service. The provisions of the bill would take effect for a given retirement system upon a majority vote of the system's board and local legislative body.
