This bill amends the existing law on charter school admissions in Massachusetts. It defines an "eligible student" as any student who would be eligible to attend the charter school under the district's assignment policy. If the number of eligible students residing in the city or town where the charter school is located, or who are siblings of current students, exceeds the available spaces, an "opt-out" lottery automatically including all eligible students will be held to fill the spaces. Regional charter schools are exempt from the local preference requirement but must still prioritize siblings of current students. If the remaining eligible students exceed the available spaces, the regional charter school will conduct a single opt-out lottery to determine admissions.
