Bill Summary

Relative to creditable service for certain public safety officers. Public Service.

AI Summary

This bill allows certain public safety officers who are members of a city or town retirement system to receive creditable service for any previous period they served as a public safety officer in another state or for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, up to a maximum of 5 years. To receive this credit, the officer must pay into the retirement system an amount equal to what would have been deducted from their compensation during that prior out-of-state or MBTA service, plus interest, ensuring the system is fully funded. The bill also specifies how this credit is calculated and allows for refunds if the officer's Massachusetts service ends up being less than their prior out-of-state or MBTA service.
