This bill establishes the New York State Online Privacy Act, which creates the Office of Online Privacy Protection and Internet Safety to promote and protect the online privacy and internet safety of individuals and businesses. The bill also creates the New York State Online Accounts and Social Media Privacy Act, which prohibits employers, educational institutions, and landlords from requesting disclosure of personal internet account information from employees, students, and tenants. Additionally, the bill requires providers of personal internet accounts to establish and disclose privacy policies, and to have processes for destruction of user information. The bill includes definitions, responsibilities, liability, and enforcement provisions.
