Bill Summary

Joint Consolidation Loan Separation Act

AI Summary

This bill, the Joint Consolidation Loan Separation Act, amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 to allow married couples (or previously married couples) who received a joint consolidation loan to apply to the Secretary of Education to receive separate Federal Direct Consolidation Loans. The separate loans would be equal to the percentage of the original joint consolidation loan that was attributable to each individual borrower. The bill also allows individual borrowers to apply separately for a separate consolidation loan in certain cases, such as if they have experienced domestic violence or economic abuse from the other borrower, or if the Secretary determines it would be in the best fiscal interests of the federal government.
