This bill, the Fairness For Breastfeeding Mothers Act of 2017, requires certain public buildings that are open to the public and contain a public restroom to provide a lactation room, separate from a bathroom, that is private, shielded from view, and contains a chair, a working surface, and an electrical outlet (if the building has electricity). The bill defines a "covered public building" as one that is open to the public and contains a public restroom, including federal buildings listed in the relevant statutes. The appropriate authority responsible for the building can exempt it from this requirement if the building does not already have a lactation room for employees and it would not be feasible to create one at a reasonable cost. The amendments made by this bill will take effect one year after the date of enactment.
