Bill Summary

Ambulance Medicare Budget and Operations Act of 2017

AI Summary

This bill, the Ambulance Medicare Budget and Operations Act of 2017, would: 1) Require providers and suppliers of ground ambulance services to report cost data to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, with some exceptions for providers serving fewer than 20 Medicare beneficiaries. This reporting requirement would apply to hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies that furnish ground ambulance services. 2) Authorize the Secretary to suspend Medicare payments to ground ambulance providers and suppliers that fail to submit complete, accurate, and timely cost reports. The Secretary would also be able to collect additional information from these providers. 3) Require the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission to assess the accuracy and burden of the cost reporting, and provide a recommendation on whether cost reporting should be required or modified. 4) Extend for 5 years, from 2018 to 2023, certain Medicare payment provisions for ground ambulance services. The goal of the bill is to improve the cost reporting and payment policies for ground ambulance services under the Medicare program.
