This bill aims to address physician staffing shortages at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in several ways: 1. It requires the VA to designate at least 50 scholarships per year under the Health Professionals Educational Assistance Program specifically for individuals pursuing medical or dental degrees, until the staffing shortage for those positions is less than 500. After that, at least 10% of the scholarships must be designated for those fields. 2. It establishes a new Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program to help the VA recruit and retain physicians in medical specialties where staffing is difficult. Eligible individuals can receive up to $160,000 over 4 years to repay their medical education loans in exchange for 12-24 months of service at the VA. 3. It creates a pilot program to provide funding for 10 eligible veterans to attend 5 specified medical schools, with the expectation that they will complete their training and then serve for 4 years as full-time clinical employees of the VA.
