This bill, the Safeguarding America's Future and Environment (SAFE) Act, aims to establish an integrated national approach to respond to the ongoing and expected effects of extreme weather and climate change on the fish, wildlife, and plants of the United States. It directs the federal government to work with state, local, and tribal governments to protect, manage, and conserve these natural resources, in order to maintain their resilience and adaptability. The bill establishes a working group to coordinate the development and implementation of a National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy, and creates a National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center to support this effort. It also requires states to develop their own adaptation plans, which must be approved by federal agencies, in order to be eligible for related funding.
