Bill Summary
AN ACT To amend chapter 561, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to the court disclosing certain consequences prior to accepting a guilty plea.
AI Summary
This bill requires courts to explain certain consequences of pleading guilty before accepting such a plea. Specifically, the court must explain the maximum and minimum penalties, the possibility of increased sentences due to prior or future convictions, any registration requirements and associated restrictions, and the potential impact on the defendant's ability to obtain housing, loans, education, employment, licenses, and custody of a child, as well as the ability to possess firearms and remain in the country. This is intended to ensure that defendants fully understand the implications of pleading guilty before making that decision.
