Bill Summary

To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow section 529 education accounts to be used for homeschooling expenses. This bill amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow distributions from qualified tuition programs (known as 529 plans) to be used for certain expenses in connection with a homeschool (whether treated as a homeschool or a private school for purposes of state law). The expenses include: curriculum and curricular materials, books or other instructional materials, online educational materials, tuition for tutoring or educational classes outside of the home (if the tutor or instructor is not related to the student), dual enrollment in an institution of higher education, and educational therapies for students with disabilities.

AI Summary

This bill amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow distributions from 529 education savings plans to be used for certain homeschooling expenses. This includes expenses for curriculum, instructional materials, online educational materials, tutoring, dual enrollment at higher education institutions, and educational therapies for students with disabilities, as long as the homeschool is treated as either a homeschool or a private school under state law. The changes would take effect as if they were included in a previous tax law passed in 2017.
