This bill amends the New York Penal Law to increase the penalties for assaulting a peace officer, police officer, firefighter, emergency medical services professional, sanitation enforcement agent, or New York City sanitation worker. Specifically, it creates a new offense of "Assault on a peace officer, police officer, firefighter, emergency medical services professional, sanitation enforcement agent or New York city sanitation worker in the second degree", which is a class D felony. The bill also modifies the existing "Assault on a peace officer, police officer, firefighter, emergency medical services professional, sanitation enforcement agent or New York city sanitation worker in the first degree" offense, which is a class C felony, by expanding the list of covered professionals and adding "emergency medical services professional" and "sanitation enforcement agent or New York city sanitation worker".
