This bill prohibits the possession, sale, or transfer of assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines in Alabama. Assault weapons are defined as select-fire firearms or certain semi-automatic firearms with specific features, such as the ability to accept detachable magazines. Large-capacity magazines are those that can hold more than seven rounds of ammunition. The bill makes the unlawful sale or transfer of an assault weapon or large-capacity magazine a Class B felony, and the unlawful possession of an assault weapon a Class C felony. Exceptions are provided for law enforcement, military, and corrections personnel in the course of their official duties. The bill also allows individuals to arrange in advance to relinquish prohibited items to law enforcement agencies.
