This bill, known as the Family Protection Act, regulates property and casualty insurance exclusions in Minnesota. It prohibits insurance policies from excluding coverage for bodily injury solely because the injured person is a resident or member of the insured's household or is related to the insured by blood or marriage. However, the bill allows for permitted exclusions, such as those for fraud, intentional or criminal conduct, and other exclusions permitted by law. The bill also requires insurance companies seeking to increase premiums due to this law to obtain approval from the Commissioner of Commerce, who cannot deny a request supported by actuarial and claim data. The law applies to boat insurance policies and personal umbrella policies and takes effect immediately upon final enactment.
