Bill Summary
This bill clarifies the extension period for the expiration of a driver's license, identification card, or motor vehicle registration certificate that is granted to a person who is an active duty military personnel and who is stationed outside of the State, and that person's immediate family. The bill clarifies that the driver's license, identification card, or motor vehicle registration certificate of any active duty member of the Armed Forces of the United States, and any person in the member's immediate family, is to remain valid beyond the expiration date until the earlier of the following dates: (1) 90 days after the person who is a member of the of any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States is discharged from military duty; or (2) 90 days after the person's return to the State. It is the sponsor's intent to clarify the law concerning the duty of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (commission) to active duty military personnel and their families as certain commission agencies and service locations have not properly provided service to active duty military personnel in accordance with the law or have misinterpreted the law's provisions to the detriment of active duty military personnel and their families while providing service.
