This bill aims to modernize the prevention of childhood lead poisoning in Massachusetts. It does this by: 1) Defining a "blood lead level of concern" as lead levels in a child under 6 years old that are less than the amount defined as "lead poisoning" but still above a certain threshold (not greater than 5 micrograms per deciliter). 2) Defining "lead poisoning" as lead levels in a child under 6 that meet a certain regulatory threshold, but not greater than 10 micrograms per deciliter. 3) Requiring the state Department of Public Health to conduct surveillance and outreach to identify children with blood lead levels of concern and provide them with appropriate case management services. 4) Removing language that previously allowed the Department to define lead poisoning levels through regulation, and instead tying the definitions to the specific thresholds outlined in the bill.
