This bill amends the Texas Penal Code to increase the criminal penalties for the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child. Specifically, it changes the offense from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class B misdemeanor, and increases the penalty to a state jail felony if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury to themselves or another person. The changes in the law apply only to offenses committed on or after the effective date of September 1, 2019.
