This bill amends Section 23-47-80 of the South Carolina Code of Laws to include 911 call abuse via text messaging as an unlawful act. The bill makes it unlawful to use profane or harassing language on an emergency 911 number, to text or call the 911 number for the purpose of annoying or disrupting the service, to intentionally fail to disengage from a 911 call, to text 911 in such a volume as to disrupt the emergency service, or to text or call 911 and intentionally make a false report. Violators of these provisions face a misdemeanor charge, punishable by up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $200.
