Bill Summary

Relative to the payment of wages to terminated employees. Labor and Workforce Development.

AI Summary

This bill amends Section 148 of Chapter 149 of the General Laws to require employers to pay terminated employees on the next regularly scheduled pay period, provided it is not more than 2 weeks from the date of discharge. If the next regular pay period is greater than 2 weeks, payment must be issued prior to 2 weeks from the discharge date. Employers who do not comply with this provision may face up to 2.5 years of imprisonment and the employee is entitled to treble damages. However, if the employer is under bankruptcy protection, considering bankruptcy, or anticipates going out of business prior to the next pay date, the employee must be paid on the date of discharge.
