This bill amends the Massachusetts teachers' retirement system. It requires teachers who transfer into the teachers' retirement system or the Boston retirement system on or after July 1, 2001 and before July 1, 2019 to participate in the alternative superannuation retirement benefit program, unless they elected not to participate by December 31, 2019. The bill also provides a new one-time opportunity for these teachers to elect to participate in the alternative superannuation retirement benefit program between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020. Additionally, the bill applies the alternative superannuation retirement benefit program requirement to teachers who transfer into the teachers' retirement system or the Boston retirement system on or after July 1, 2019, with a 180-day window to elect out of the program if their prior membership includes service before July 1, 2019.
