This bill enhances courthouse security by imposing penalties for carrying firearms, loaded or unloaded, in courthouses without written authorization. Specifically, it establishes a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, for unauthorized possession of a firearm in a courthouse. It also imposes a harsher penalty of up to 5 years in state prison or 2.5 years in jail, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both, for carrying a firearm in a courthouse with the intent to use it during the commission of a crime. The bill defines "firearm" as any pistol, revolver, rifle, or smoothbore arm that can discharge a shot, bullet, or pellet. It also requires the posting of notice about these provisions at the public entrances of each courthouse.
