This bill aims to enhance courthouse security by prohibiting individuals, other than law enforcement officers performing official duties, from carrying firearms in courthouses without written authorization from the trial court administrator and trial court chief justice. The bill imposes a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, for such unauthorized firearm possession. Additionally, the bill establishes a more severe penalty of up to five years in state prison or up to two and a half years in jail or a house of correction, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both, for carrying a firearm in a courthouse with the intent to use it during the commission of a crime. The bill also requires conspicuous posting of the relevant provisions at each public entrance to each courthouse.
