This bill amends the Education Code to exempt tuition and laboratory fees at public institutions of higher education for certain paramedics, in addition to the existing exemption for firefighters enrolled in fire science courses. The bill requires the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to adopt rules governing the eligibility requirements and process for the paramedic exemption, as well as allowing the board to exclude certain distance education courses from the exemption. The bill applies beginning with the 2019 fall semester, and takes effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in both houses, or on September 1, 2019, if it does not.
