This bill requires certain motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less, manufactured or assembled after July 1, 2021, to be equipped with a functioning system that can detect the presence of an occupant in a rear seat by identifying that a seat belt is latched and that the weight on the seat is over 20 pounds. Once the vehicle's engine or motor is deactivated, the system must provide a warning. The bill does not apply to motorcycles, commercial motor vehicles, or combinations of commercial motor vehicles and trailers. The bill will be deemed repealed if any federal agency or court determines it would render New York state out of compliance with federal law or regulation.
