Bill Summary

This bill would define the term "authorized agent" as used in P.L.2000, c.46 (C.23:4-42.3 et seq.), the law authorizing community based management plans, to provide that term may include local law enforcement officers. A community based deer management plan is a plan by which a county board of agriculture, the governing body of a county or municipality, or the owner or operator of an airport may request, from the Division of Fish and Wildlife, a special deer management permit to implement alternative deer control methods in order to manage a deer population that is causing significant property damage in that area. Under this bill, the term "authorized agent" may include, but is not limited to, upon the request of a municipal governing body, a local law enforcement officer trained or otherwise approved by the division to employ alternative deer control methods.

AI Summary

This bill amends the existing law to define "authorized agent" to include local law enforcement officers, upon the request of a municipal governing body, who have been trained or approved by the Division of Fish and Wildlife to employ alternative deer control methods. This allows local law enforcement officers to participate in community-based deer management plans, which are plans submitted to the Division of Fish and Wildlife to implement alternative deer control methods, such as controlled hunting, shooting, capture and euthanization, or fertility control, in order to manage deer populations causing significant property damage in a designated special deer management area.
