This bill, the Tackling Residential Energy burdens Efficiently Act of 2020 or the TREE Act of 2020, directs the Secretary of Energy to establish a grant program for tree planting to reduce residential energy consumption. The program will provide grants to eligible entities, such as state agencies, local governments, Indian tribes, nonprofits, and retail power providers, to conduct tree planting projects. The grants can cover up to 75% of the eligible costs, which include planning, tree purchases, site preparation, and maintenance. The bill prioritizes projects that provide the largest potential reduction in energy consumption for households with a high energy burden, are located in areas with lower tree cover and higher summer temperatures, and engage the local community. The program is authorized to receive $50 million annually from 2021 to 2025.
