This bill, the Tackling Residential Energy burdens Efficiently Act of 2020 or the TREE Act of 2020, directs the Secretary of Energy to establish a grant program for tree planting to reduce residential energy consumption. The program will provide grants to eligible entities, such as state and local governments, Indian tribes, non-profit organizations, and retail power providers, to conduct tree planting projects. The grants can cover up to 75% of the eligible costs, which include planning, purchasing trees, site preparation, and maintenance for up to 3 years. The bill aims to prioritize projects that can provide the largest potential reduction in residential energy consumption for households with a high energy burden, are located in areas with lower tree canopy and higher summer temperatures, and engage the local community in the process.
