Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to removing limits on the duration of treatment by a licensed physical therapist when a patient does not have a referral

AI Summary

This bill amends the education law to remove the limits on the duration of treatment by a licensed physical therapist when a patient does not have a referral. Specifically, the bill removes the previous requirement that the physical therapist must have practiced for at least 3 years full-time and the 10-visit or 30-day limit on treatment without a referral. Instead, the bill requires the physical therapist to refer the patient to an appropriate licensed professional if the symptoms are contraindicated for physical therapy or outside the scope of practice. The physical therapist must also communicate with the patient's primary care provider during the course of treatment and provide written notice to the patient that the treatment may not be covered by their health plan without a referral.
