This bill removes the existing limits on the duration of treatment by a licensed physical therapist when a patient does not have a referral from a physician, dentist, podiatrist, nurse practitioner, or licensed midwife. The bill requires the physical therapist to refer the patient to the appropriate licensed professional if the symptoms are contraindicated for physical therapy or indicative of conditions outside the scope of physical therapy practice. Additionally, the physical therapist must communicate with the patient's primary care provider or other treating physician during the course of treatment. The bill also requires the physical therapist to provide written notice to the patient that physical therapy without a referral may not be covered by the patient's health care plan or insurer.
