This bill establishes the Department of State Student Internship Program, a paid internship program that provides students the opportunity to learn about careers in diplomacy and foreign affairs. The program is open to eligible students enrolled at least half-time at institutions of higher education, both in the United States and abroad, who can obtain a security clearance. The Secretary of State will select participants based on their demonstrated interest in foreign affairs and academic performance, and actively recruit from underrepresented groups. The bill requires the internships to be paid at least the federal minimum wage or the local minimum wage, whichever is higher, and provides housing and travel assistance for eligible students. The bill also directs the Secretary to transition all unpaid State Department internships to paid programs within three years, with limited waiver authority.
