AN ACT to amend the insurance law, in relation to mandatory health insurance coverage for acupuncture services

This bill amends the insurance law to require health insurance policies issued within the health benefit exchange to provide coverage for acupuncture treatment. The coverage must be provided by licensed, authorized, or certified acupuncturists, and may be subject to reasonable deductibles, copayments, coinsurance amounts, fee or benefit limits, and utilization review, as long as these are no greater than for other essential health benefits covered by the policy and do not discriminate against acupuncture treatment. The bill also clarifies that it does not prevent the provision or coverage of acupuncture treatment and services by licensed or certified acupuncturists in hospital facilities.
